Today I completed some computer-based training (CBT), the AF Culture General Course, which is required for my deployment. Not only was it mind-numbingly boring, I quickly got the sense it was written by some P-C, tree-hugging, tofu-eating Kumbaya-singing bureaucrat. Not that there isn't value in understanding other cultures, but sprinkled throughout were semi-veiled stabs at Americans and our overbearing, ethnocentric, racist ways. Anyway, it's done, and I handed in my certificate. Check the box.
It's been a month since I was notified of my deployment. I've been quite busy since then. I've had to do a ton of CBTs, plus I qualified on the M9 (9mm pistol). As an aside: I'm farsighted, but didn't have my glasses when I was on the range. As a result, the target and both the front and rear sights were all out of focus for me. Despite that, I was only 4 shots off from qualifying expert. All 45 rounds were on target, and I had the required 6 head shots, but only had 21 of 25 body shots. I qualify on the M16 on Tuesday. I already have an expert ribbon on that weapon, but maybe I can duplicate the feat next week.
J and K2 seem to be handling my looming absence fairly well. I'm taking some leave for the 2 weeks leading up to my departure, so that will be nice. The boss finally named a stunt-double for me while I'm gone, so it's been much better than it could have been if I was juggling deployment prep with my day job. Still, I got home just before 19:00 today, so you see how that's working out.
Well, dinner is served...more later.
